Anatomic footwear, decoded

An anatomic sandal is a wellness product, not a fashion one.

BIOS anatomic sandals are built around a contoured footbed that redistributes weight away from the forefoot, supports the medial arch, and cradles the heel. They are the core product of the "wellness footwear" retail category worldwide and the entry drug to the diabetic-friendly and orthopaedic sub-segments. Our Elche and Alicante partners have been producing BIOS-style sandals since the 1990s.

What makes a *BIOS* sandal

Footbed: cork-latex composite, thermo-formed to a neutral arch profile (4 mm drop), covered in soft suede or microfibre. Top layer: removable EVA insole — enables swap to orthotic prescription insoles without altering the shoe. Outsole: lightweight EVA or TR rubber, flex-grooved, slip-rated.

Uppers: leather, nubuck, microfibre or recycled synthetics. Adjustability is central: double or triple buckle straps as standard, velcro on wellness-retail variants.

Where this line *sells*

Wellness footwear retail (Leder & Schuh, Deichmann wellness floor, independent comfort-shop chains) across DACH, Benelux and Scandinavia. Pharmacies and podology chains in France, Italy and Spain. Diabetic-friendly DTC brands in North America. Podology specialists with own-label programmes across Europe.

This is not a line for fashion-led retail. It is a line for retailers whose customer walked in because their feet hurt.

*CE* and compliance

All 120 models can be produced under CE declaration as General Product Safety-compliant comfort footwear. For retailers distributing through medical or diabetic-specialist channels, we produce to Class I MDR (Medical Device Regulation EU 2017/745) on request, including technical file preparation and UDI assignment. Diabetic-specific models undergo additional seamless-lining QC.

BIOS & anatomic FAQ

Questions from wellness and medical buyers.

Are your BIOS sandals CE-marked?
All 120 models can be supplied with a CE declaration under EU General Product Safety Regulation. For distribution through medical channels (pharmacies, podology chains, diabetic-specialist retail), we produce to Class I Medical Device Regulation (EU 2017/745) with full technical file, UDI assignment and labelling compliance — standard 3-week compliance preparation at kick-off.
Can the footbed be replaced with a prescription orthotic?
Yes. Every BIOS model ships with a removable EVA top layer over the cork-latex footbed. The top layer can be removed so the customer — or their podologist — can fit a prescription orthotic directly against the contoured cork base. This is the primary sales argument for the wellness retail channel.
What is the fit like compared to Birkenstock?
Comparable silhouette, slightly wider toe box on the standard block, and a slightly deeper heel cup. Our standard Narrow and Regular widths match the Birkenstock equivalents closely; our Wide block is 6 mm wider at the forefoot. On custom development we can match any reference fit pair you send us.
Do you produce diabetic-specific footwear?
Yes. Our BIOS Medical sub-line is designed for the diabetic-footcare channel: seamless linings (no interior stitching against the forefoot), extra depth for bespoke orthotics, velcro adjustability, and pressure-mapped footbeds. Produced under MDR Class I where the destination market requires it.
What certifications do your BIOS factories hold?
Our core BIOS partners are ISO 13485 (medical devices quality management), REACH-compliant, and covered by Spanish EU labour standards. One is SEDEX-audited. On request we provide the full audit pack per factory, with dates and scope, before you place an order.
Can we launch a BIOS private label in under 6 months?
Yes. A rebrand-only private label BIOS launch (our catalogue, your logo, your box, CE declaration in your name) runs 10–12 weeks from signed enquiry to goods-in. A custom-last BIOS project runs 20–24 weeks.
